Dr. Rudi Hops
New Zealand Dr. Rudi Hop Profile
Dr. Rudi, a triploid variety released in 1976 by the New Zealand Horticultural Research Center, was renamed in 2012 to honor the breeder largely considered the father of New Zealand's hop program. The result of an open-pollinated Smoothcone mother, Dr. Rudi was initially destined to be a "super alpha" variety, but is now considered a dual-purpose hop, displaying bright aromas of pine, lime pith and lemongrass. With an alpha of 10-12%, Dr. Rudi is capable of carrying IPAs on its own, yet displays nicely in lighter styles like pilsners and pale ales.
