Kohatu Hops
New Zealand Kohatu™ Hop Profile
Kohatu™ hops were released in 2011 by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research. It is a lower Alpha variety (6-7%) that is a descendant of Hallertau Mittelfrüh, which is where Kohatu inherited its high Humulene oil content from. This high Humulene percentage (36-37% of total oil) imparts a complex woodsy and resinous character. Kohatu also has a high Myrcene content (35-36%) that gives it a very fresh aroma of tropical fruits, making it an excellent hop for single-hopped pale ales and session IPAs.
Commercial examples: A bunch of single-hopped IPAs from breweries like BrewDog and Cigar City
Origin: Named after a tiny village south of the hop-growing region of Nelson in New Zealand. It also may take its name from the Maori word meaning stone or rock.
